The original production of Carousel opened on Broadway on 19 April 1945, with music by Richard Rodgers, and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The setting was transplanted from Ferenc Molnar’s 1909 play set in Budapest to a New England fishing village. Carousel was one of the first musicals with a tragic plot. This scene shows Bambi Linn (Louise Bigelow), Jan Clayton (Julie Jordan), Jean Darling (Carrie Pipperidge), John Raitt (Billy Bigelow) and Murvyn Vye (Jigger Craigin).
