Known as the ‘Sonja Henie of roller skates’, Gloria Nord became a star as the leading lady of Skating Vanities, a lavish skating production that toured to sell-out audiences across America. The show, which played to more than one million people during its first two years, featured a cast of one hundred waltzing, conga-dancing skaters wearing extravagant costumes of ostrich plumes and sequins. Nord appeared on the cover of magazines, acquired a loyal fan base amongst servicemen, and was given a skating cameo in the 1944 Betty Grable film Pin up girl.
