Around 1926 Cossington Smith worked part-time as a teacher at Turramurra College, a school for boys around the corner from her home. Boys drawing reveals the ease she felt with children. The sense of shared enjoyment is apparent in the puckish smile of the boy on the right which illuminates the work and sets the mood. Like Still life with vegetables, this painting was preceded by numerous sketchbook drawings.
