Cossington Smith’s meditative late still life paintings are also interiors. In works like Still life with white cup and saucer patterns of leafy foliage through the windows connect with sensuous draperies and everyday objects, suggesting animation in nature and in the seemingly ordinary things that surround us. In this work which was one of her last major paintings, fragmented brushmarks are like particles, imparting a sense of a shimmering light and energy underlying all things.
