The subjects of Grace Cossington Smith’s vibrant modernist paintings of the early 1930s had some unexpected sources such as those resulting from a stay in Canberra when the artist was invited to give lessons to the Governor General’s wife, Lady Isaacs. Cossington Smith’s drawings and paintings of Black Mountain, The Cotter Dam and Yarralumla are striking modernist images.
