Cossington Smith’s friend Lucy Swanton, one of the directors at Macquarie Galleries, was taken with the early interiors and encouraged her to work on a larger scale. The result was her most significant interior to that point, Interior with verandah doors. Swanton recalled seeing this work exhibited and not selling: ‘I looked at this beautiful painting hanging there, still unsold. It just shone from the wall. I thought, “That’s for me” and I bought it myself’. She later gifted it to the National Gallery of Australia.
