Heysen had a particularly high regard for his oil painting Foothills of the Flinders 1929, describing it as ‘the best of the Northern pictures’. This comment is typical of the artist’s remarks on a recently painted work, but it also reflects his preference among a group of his paintings. In saying this he was recommending it for purchase by the Art Gallery of South Australia.[1]
