Dutch farm worker gathering wood 1901 is a conventional essay in the Dutch Barbizon manner, but Heysen has nevertheless captured the sincerity and solidarity of a hardworking peasant, a theme he would explore more fully on return to Australia with the farm workers of Hahndorf.
