‘The subtlety of a light-coloured tree against light was the problem. To get the weight of that tree—its character and strength—and yet retain the light surrounding it, playing around the tree. And a feeling of sunlight throughout the whole. I often wondered how I could retain a feeling of a very light trunk against a very light landscape, and make it look as if it were growing and solid ... Nature doesn’t deal in pure colours, out of a tube. The colours are mixed with atmosphere.’

Hans Heysen, 1966–67
