Lambert in Paris (1900-1902)
From February 1901 until November 1902 Lambert studied art in Paris. Lambert looked at the masterpieces of European art on display in museums and galleries and used these as a source of reference and learning.
In bohemian fashion, and like most other students, Lambert grew a beard and donned loose brown velvet trousers. He enjoyed attending exhibitions with fellow student, Hugh Ramsay. Ramsay observed of the 1902 opening of the New Salon exhibition: ‘such a crowd of swells you never saw in your life and hosts of celebrities’, including Sarah Bernhardt and James McNeill Whistler.
