Lambert in Australia (1921-1930)

Lambert returned to Australia in 1921, a highly successful artist. In 1922 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA), the only Australian painter to receive this honour.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales purchased The white glove for 600 guineas, at this time the highest price paid for a portrait by an Australian artist. In 1922 a private collector purchased Self-portrait with gladioli for £1000. In 1927 Lambert won the Archibald Prize for his portrait of Mrs Annie Murdoch.

Lambert’s painting A squatter’s daughter provided a new vision of the Australian landscape. In 1930 Daryl Lindsay said that he considered it to be the most significant landscape yet painted in Australia.

Lambert helped achieve a greater acceptance of more modernist ideas in Australia. Grace Crowley said that ‘the students, including myself, fell down on their knees and worshipped Lambert (figuratively speaking of course)’.
