Lambert and Sculpture

Sculpture is essentially drawing or a craft in which drawing is the basic part and continual accompaniment.

George W. Lambert, 1922.

A good part of Lambert’s last years were spent making sculpture. From his student days he had dreamed of making sculpture, but did not do so until 1919 when he began work on an entry for the Desert Mounted Corps memorial competition. His principal concern in his sculpture was with the arrangement of the group and with conveying energy through the massing of forms.

There is only one approach to sculpture. He who wishes to produce sculpture must treat his work with the same reverence as the genuine religieuse of the East treats his God. Sculpture is a religion.

George W. Lambert, 1924
