This sketch is related to Lambert’s sculpture, Henry Lawson memorial 1927–30 (cat.121). Lambert made several pencil studies for this group, as a submission to the competition for the memorial. He submitted drawings in December 1926. This is one of them, showing the bronze group as it would appear in its final location, on a pedestal among trees in a parkland setting. The site was in the Domain outside the Botanic Gardens above Woolloomooloo Bay in Sydney. Lambert has depicted the group from the left side, emphasising the poet with his raised hand as if orating to a group.
