This is one of several drawings which Lambert made as studies for his large family group The blue hat 1909 (Kerry Stokes Collection, Perth). These drawings suggest that Lambert made studies for the individual figures and for the entire composition before painting his large family groups.
In this drawing Lambert depicted Thea Proctor standing in a similar pose to that of the painting. She wears the same coat that she wore as a model for The holiday group(The bathers) (cat.35) and the hat and coat she wore when posing for Portrait group (The mother) (cat.38).
