Lionel Lindsay based this print on a watercolour by Long, Pastoral c 1917 (cat 53). On hearing about Lindsay’s print, Long commented: ‘I was very interested in your account of the Lindsay etching from one of my landscapes and would very much like to see what he made of it but he hasn’t sent the copy as you said he was going to’ (Long, 25 April 1918).
Pastoral was first shown in 1918 in the ‘Society of Artists Spring exhibition’, 9–22 October (165).
