Education resource for Years 7 to 10
This resource is designed to assist Years 7 to 10 teachers and students in exploring the exhibition Myth and magic: art of the Sepik River, Papua New Guinea. Activities and inquiry questions for six key works focus on the subjects Geography (for Years 7 to 8), and Visual Arts and Design and Technologies (for Years 7 to 10). Each question is followed by a link to relevant content descriptions in the Australian Curriculum.
Papua New Guinea is Australia's closest neighbour and the Sepik River, which snakes west from the mountains towards the Bismarck Sea, is the nation's largest freshwater system. The rich and unspoiled habitat of the vast Sepik River and the variety of cultural, artistic and spiritual expressions of those who inhabit its villages and communities, make it a rich source of learning across a number of curriculum areas. The NGA exhibition Myth and magic is a rare and exciting opportunity to see works of art from one of the most culturally diverse regions in the Asia-Pacific.
All of the questions can be completed by students as pre-visit preparation for viewing the exhibition or post-visit follow-up; alternatively, classes can access high-quality images, video footage and 3D animations of selected works of art online through the NGA's website.
