While living on Murrin Bridge Mission we were not allowed to leave unless we had permission from the manager. On certain occasions he would let us leave, for funerals for example, or to work for farmers, picking peas and bagging potatoes. So we left and worked on that farm for one month. It was hard work, but we saved our money. As a going girl I thought it was wonderful; we slept in a barn on top of the hay then, when the month was up, we went into town to shop and then back to the mission.
