Boyd lampoons historical figures pertinent to his own identity: Governor Arthur Philip, not as the First Governor of the Antipodes, but in the guise of a buccaneer Governor No Beard 2005 – an exotic parrot perched on his shoulder, his eye-patch at a jaunty angle, master of all he surveys. The work is an appropriation of an oil portrait by F Wheatley, 1786, which is held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London.
