The modernist landscape 1920–40

To some extent modernist painters saw landscape painting itself as a conservative subject and the preserve of businessman-painters. Women modernists regularly chose other subjects, such as still lifes, interiors and figure compositions, or city and industrial subjects. The leading modernist men, de Maistre and Wakelin, continued to paint suburban landscapes.
