This is said to be a memento mori of the Australian painter Louis Buvelot (1814–1888) on his death aged 72. Only four years after migrating to Australia and settling in Melbourne in 1865, Buvelot’s work was purchased by the National Gallery of Victoria. He is said to have taught Roberts at the Trades Hall School of Design in Carlton and at one time lived in the same street as the younger artist.
