Golda Abrahams (1856–1945), née Brasch, was the wife of Roberts’ friend Louis, whose earlier portrait is hung here beside this painting. Roberts was a witness at the Abrahams’ wedding in Sydney on 21 March 1888 and is said to have painted this portrait as a wedding present after they all returned to Melbourne. The work was painted in Roberts’ studio in Grosvenor Chambers. Roberts also painted several portrait of Golda’s sister Lena in 1893.
