The subject of this portrait is 13-year-old Ethel Chapman, the younger sister of the artist Alice Chapman, a friend of Roberts and a member of the Australian Artists’ Association. Influenced by the full-length portraits of Whistler, Roberts posed young Ethel on a fox pelt. The girl’s melancholy expression is reflected in the sad gaze of the Scottish deerhound that fondly looks up at her.
