Lilian Stirling was born in 1884, in Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. Her father, a physician, had rooms there, opposite the Melbourne Hospital. He was a friend of the artist. This commissioned portrait demonstrates the fashion at the time for dressing girls as miniature versions of their mothers.
