Ada Furlong was a photographer and artists’ model of the late 1890s, and later was the secretary of Gregan McMahon’s Sydney Repertory Theatre Society. This painting belongs stylistically and thematically to the mid-1890s, when Roberts was painting panel portraits of male figures.
