G.W.L. Marshall-Hall (1862–1915) arrived in Australia in 1891 to take up the new Chair of Music at the University of Melbourne. He subsequently established the Marshall-Hall Orchestra and the University of Melbourne Conservatorium. Atheist, socialist, poet and passionate bohemian as well as Wagnerite composer, he quickly became friends with Roberts, Arthur Streeton and other artists.
