This pretty, sheltered spot was a popular destination for members of an urban leisure-seeking society and for artists, who recorded its ambience and natural beauty. A regular ferry service helped promote a flow of day-trippers to the bay, who could partake in the comforts of Lewis’s Refreshment Rooms or perhaps hire a rowing boat from one of the two boat proprietors operating there, as the handsome couple in the rowing boat appear tohave done. Nothing disturbs the tranquillity of this place of easeful, middle-class leisure.
