The journalist and politician Andrew Garran (1825–1901) was born in London and migrated to Adelaide in 1851. In 1856 he joined the Sydney Morning Herald and became its editor in 1873. He edited the three volumes of the Picturesque atlas of Australasia, published in 1886. Sir Henry Parkes appointed him to the Legislative Council of the New South Wales parliament in 1887.
