Madame Ruby Hartl (née Assafrey) was a London-based friend of Roberts who, soon after this portrait was displayed at the Royal Academy, was involved in a minor, though public, divorce scandal with her future husband, Fielding Nalder. They later moved to Passalacqua Moltrasio near Lake Como in Italy where Roberts visited the couple and painted many scenes of the surrounding region.
