The German princess, Mary of Teck, christened Victoria Mary Augusta Louise Olga Pauline Claudine Agnes (1867–1953), was born and raised in England. Her nickname was May, after her birth month. She was initially betrothed to her future husband’s elder brother, but six weeks after they announced their engagement he died of pneumonia. The following year she became engaged to George and became Queen when he ascended the throne in 1910.
