By the early the 1960s Williams’s work became progressively more abstract. There is rich ambiguity in the screen-like vertical forms in this taut composition In the striking combination of broad and narrow vertical lines and subtleties of tonal colour the artist simultaneously abstracts from nature and evokes the idea of the dense forest.
