In Murray Pass, Erith Island Williams adopts an almost filmic view, like a zoom lens taking a different perspective of far distance and close-up in each strip, in a sense mapping the profile of the landscape. The work recalls topographical drawings and watercolours of the early nineteenth century by William Westall and Charles Lesueur. These more images help us to gain an understanding of the topography that inspired Williams’s more abstract impressions of this location.
