The format for Oval landscape was partly informed by work by the Cubist works of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. The internal subject relates to tree felling in the landscape, indicated by the shape of the axe close to the horizon line. When this work was first exhibited, a number of writers commented on the feeling of turbulent energy compressed within the bare surrounds of the white canvas.
