Hillsides became and important point of inspiration for Williams while living at Upwey. The curve of the hill in this work concentrates our attention on the edges where earth and sky meet; the defined boundary line softened by the organic, dancing notations of small trees. Williams’s exploration of geometric structure in this hillside painting was a striking and significant new development in his representation of the landscape.
