Hoppe
The Firebird
- Madame Thamar Karsavina and M. Adolph Bolm from E.O. Hoppe, Studies
from the Russian Ballet 1913
National Gallery of Australia, Canberra
The photographer Hoppe published four views of Tamara Karsavina and Adolph
Bolm in his 1913 portfolio. His moody studies were reproduced by the rotogravure
technique, in tones ranging from dark grey to brown, almost sepia. Hoppe's
renditions of the dancers alternated from close-ups to complex, dramatic
full-figure poses. He captured the mysterious character of the ornately-decorated
Firebird as played by Karsavina, with Bolm as the romantic Prince.
