In this ‘impressionistic’ oil sketch Constable depicted sombre, grey summer clouds charged with rain, creating a contrast with the reflections of light on the sea. In depicting the overcast sky and a sense of failing light he expressed his interest in the changeability of nature. His inclusion of the two people walking along the beach with backs bent suggests a strong oncoming breeze.
