This is one of a number of views of Brighton in which Constable depicted fishermen and their boats. He included the figure leaning  on an upturned boat in a number of these oil sketches. Constable wrote to Fisher: ‘The fishing boats are picturesque, but not so much as the Hastings boats, which are luggers’ (Beckett VI, pp. 182–83).
