Marilyn Levine was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, on 22 December 1935. She gained a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1957, followed by a Masters in 1959, from the University of Alberta, Edmonton. She gained a Master of Arts in 1970 and a Master of Fine Arts, Sculpture, in 1971, both from the University of California, Berkeley. Levine came to prominence in the 1970s for her realistic clay sculptures that persuasively imitate the appearance of leather objects, in the style of American Super Realism. She has held many solo exhibitions since the mid-1960s, and her work has been included in numerous group shows including Craft Today USA, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, and Contemporary Ceramics from the Smits Collection, Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1987.

Levine’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Canada, as well as in Taiwan, Japan and Europe. An important joint exhibition, with Donovan T Chester, was held at Norman MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina, in 1974. Her numerous awards include an International Academy of Ceramics Medal in 1973, several Canada Council Grants, a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship grant 1976 and a Master Craftsmen Apprenticeship grant 1978. A retrospective was held at Mackenzie Art Gallery, Regina, in 1998–99. Levine lived and worked in Salt Lake City, Utah, and died in Oakland, California, on 2April 2005.
