From the mid-1950s, Baldessari gradually began to fuse photography, montage and text in his works. He was attracted by the narrative potential of images and the associative power of language. In this work, each of the images the artist captured from commercial television was inscribed with the first appropriate word he could think of, and then assembled into ‘sentences’. The randomising process opens the artist’s arrangement to the complications of language.
